The Scottish Rite Temple of Portland was built in 1902 exclusively for the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. It is the oldest remaining building in America constructed solely for the purpose of conferring the Degrees of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. We are located at the corner of SW 15th and Morrison in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland Oregon. As a part of the Freemason’s Fraternal order we have origins back to the degrees once conferred in France during the 1800s and later adapted to our current system of 32 Degrees. Although named Scottish there is no connection to the country of Scotland. Historical Tours maybe scheduled by contacting the office to make an appointment. All floors of our main building, theater, ballroom, and restrooms are fully ADA accessible.
The Scottish Rite began in Oregon in Portland in 1870 headed by the first S.G.I.G, John C. Ainsworth, 33°. This building was built in 1902 and is one of the first building specifically designed and built for the Scottish Rite in the United States. The theatre was built for a series of 29 presentations or degrees done as a Shakespearean style moral play. Many of our prominent members of the past are the names adorning the streets of Portland. This century-old building is now referred to as the Scottish Rite Center.
