Joy Craney created DTLA Tamale Shop based on the first place and time my grandmother had a tamale. Back in 1968, in Downtown Louisiana, two gentlemen served my grandmother her first tamale. As she described it, “It was love at the first bite! During that time, the flavors were at their purest, with no additives nor preservatives, just meat, and corn, and it was such a treat.”.

(Imagine her excitement when an elder in her community back in Louisiana taught her how to make tamales! )
